Since we last spoke, NRG VALORANT’s Cinderella run has not missed a beat. This past week, the team capped off an amazing opening stage of Champions, beating DRX 2-1 in the Winner's (C) match. With so many incredible moments throughout this tournament so far, it’s hard to even pinpoint one from this match, but after being steamrolled on map 1 of the series, the NRG boys went on to win maps 2 and 3 in very close affairs. Our initiator player, Brawk, stepped up massively posting a +13 in the final map to secure NRG’s spot in the top 8 of the VCT World Championship.
Moving on to the top 8 playoff bracket, we matched up with GIANTX, a European squad with a similar trajectory as ours. With 3 rookies and an unexpected run through the champions groups, just like NRG, the stage was set for a battle of two potential Darkhorse teams. Unfortunately for GX, the match was not as competitive as many had predicted. NRG, led by an incredible series from Brawk, steamrolled GC 2-0 (13-1, 13-6), in the most lopsided game of the tournament. Brawk posted an 18-1 score line in Map 1, which is now the best statistical map in VCT International competition by Kill/Death ratio!
Next up, in the Upper Semifinals, NRG squared up with Made in Brazil and former NRG player, Verno. In a battle to claim VCT Americas supremacy, both teams arrived in scorching hot form. NRG managed to take Map 1 in a triple overtime affair, with more heroics from Brawk and company. Map 2 was a wash, as MIBR came roaring back, with a dominant 13-4 score line, leaving everything to map 3, Corrode. Both teams came into Corrode with undefeated records on the map. In what can be considered one of the greatest single maps in VCT history, NRG pulled out the victory in another triple overtime thriller! With too many big moments and insane clutches to count, it took a complete team effort to defeat Aspas and MIBR. Despite Aspas posting a +38 and not a single NRG player having a positive K/D ratio, NRG secured a top 3 placement at Champs and a date with Fnatic on October 3rd in the Accor Arena in Paris, France. The Impossible Dream Lives On!!!
